What I learned after a couple of years attending a Shakespeare discussion group.

In general the main body of the group consists of what I call "worshippers." One of them even refers to himself as a 'Bardophile.' The worshipful manner when saying this led me to begin to see that these people are akin to biblical literists, in that both groups hold their texts in such high regard that objectivity and actual critical thinking are impossible.

These people are my friends, and I do not dislike even one of them personally. However, I do see this abandonment of critical thinking as a minor character flaw. I see no positive value in worshipping a long dead author, no matter how talented a genius he might have been. I find it most healthy to accept that Shakespeare on occasion improvised badly, rather than proclaiming the difficult to justify a troublesone section 'genius beyond our powers of understanding.'
